The conscientious management of natural resources is critical not only to the perpetuity of our regions, but also so that future generations can enjoy an increasingly better environment in which to live.



FORESTRY

 

WASTE MANAGEMENT

We have a structured program for waste management which provides guidance to our employees on recording, handling, temporary storage, proper disposal, and environmental cautions for the waste generated during the variety of activities they perform. This entire process provides safety for our team and for the environment, and avoids improper mixing so that waste can be reused, recycled, and disposed of properly.

 

CLIMATE CHANGE

Consistent with the world’s growing awareness on climate change, we maintain a pioneering, proactive and transparent stance on managing the topic and fostering debate.

Every year we quantify and monitor our emissions of gases that contribute to global warming (e.g., CO2, CH4, N2O, HFCs) through the Corporate Inventory of GHG Emissions, covering all stages from seedling production to delivery of pulp and byproducts.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

We create and encourage environmental education activities for all interested parties, using a participative approach. This allows us to demonstrate the value of natural conservation; we also conduct debates on eucalyptus cultivation, which provides opportunities for discussion and reflection on today’s environmental issues and challenges.

WATER RESOURCES

Preserving watersheds and bodies of water is very important to Suzano. By regularly monitoring our water resources, we constantly assess the quality of the water in our main microbasins by identifying both qualitative and quantitative aspects. Through this practice, we are able to assess the impacts of our forest stewardship and propose actions to mitigate them.

 

RESTORATION OF NATIVE AREAS

We have a comprehensive internal restoration program that works to restore areas that have been degraded over time or which are not in conformity with the applicable environmental legislation, especially in the cases of newly acquired properties. Restoring and conserving native areas has a bearing on not only the preservation of ecosystems, but also on the perpetuity and sustainability of our business. The benefits of this practice range from creating natural enemies of the pests that can damage the eucalyptus plantations, recharging aquifers, protecting the soil, removing carbon from the air and supplying non-wood products to extractivist communities.

In 2009, we further reinforced our commitment to this topic by becoming a member of the advisory board to the Atlantic Forest Restoration Pact, an initiative sponsored by public and private organizations to preserve fragments of the Atlantic Forest and recover 15 million hectares by 2050.

 

SUSTAINABLE STEWARDSHIP

Throughout the entire production cycle, our forestry practices directly reflect our concern with the environment. Our main actions on this front include:

Mosaic Planting
Our areas are planted so that the eucalyptus stands are separated by native vegetation areas.

Wildlife Corridors
Whenever possible, we try to connect, through ecological corridors, the main fragments of native forests. This improves the flow of wildlife, promotes their reproduction and feeding and improves the dispersion of flora.

Minimum Tillage
We plant our forests using minimum soil interference, which keeps the residue from harvests (small branches, leaves and bark) on the soil. This practice helps to maintain soil fertility and protects against erosion and the silting of water resources.

 

BIODIVERSITY

Our properties are located in different biomes, which include: Atlantic Forest, Cerrado and Amazonia. In all of our areas, we maintain important fragments of native forests that are home to various species of fauna and flora.

Approximately 40% of our owned land is allocated to environmental conservation. For this, we conduct a series of studies to learn continually about the environment around us and in turn adopt the best conservation practices. One example is the recognition of areas considered as having High Conservation Value because of their important biodiversity attributes.

 

INDUSTRIAL

Our conscious management in the Environment – Industrial area uses tools which
are critical for eliminating and/or mitigating negative impacts generated by our operations.

Energy Generation

ENERGY GENERATION

  • 86% of the energy generated in our industrial operations comes from renewable fuels.
  • In the second half of 2013 we installed a new biomass-powered boiler in our Mucuri Unit (Bahia) which was responsible for expanding the use of renewable fuels.
  • In 2015 a new digester was installed in our Suzano Unit (São Paulo), which helped reduce natural gas consumption by 34%.
  • Consolidation of the electrical system in our Mucuri Unit has been concluded, and expanded energy export capacity to 40 MWH/month.
  • In 2015 we purchased 41% less electrical power from the network than in 2014.
Atmospheric Emissions

ATMOSPHERIC EMISSIONS

  • The atmospheric emissions from our industrial units are controlled by electrostatic precipitators, scrubbers, and incinerators. In 2014 the Mucuri Unit (Bahia) had the highest rate of emissions reduction among all the units (11%) as a result of investments to replace fuel oil with natural gas in lime kilns and auxiliary boilers.
  • In the Suzano Unit (São Paulo) there was a 67% reduction in NOx-type gas generation due to improvements in the electronic control technology for recovery boiler burners.
Solid Waste

SOLID WASTE

  • In our Imperatriz Unit (Maranhão) we have implemented a system to burn 100% of the primary sludge generated in the effluent treatment plant in the biomass boiler. This material, which is mainly composed of post-process fibers, has enough calorific value to be used as an alternative fuel.
Water Resources

WATER RESOURCES

  • In 2014, we returned approximately 78% of the water resources we used to nature after appropriate treatment. Most of the remaining 22% of the water returned to the environment in the form of steam, while only a small fraction was retained in the productive processes.
  • We have approved a project to modernize the effluent treatment plant at the Mucuri Unit (Bahia), which will reduce the organic load discharged into the Mucuri River by 50% compared with the average values for 2015. This project will be fully operational in the first half of 2018.
