SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Our relationships with all stakeholders are based on transparency and open dialogue, which enables us to build high-quality relations and to create shared value.

SOCIAL DIAGNOSIS

Before launching operations in a region, we conduct local diagnoses to map local communities and understand their cultural attributes and particularities.

This comprehensive effort is one of the pillars of our strategic and social positioning and is the starting point for a series of actions to foster cultural activities, income generation and education.

COMMUNITY COUNCILS

In 2015, we launched a new participatory process for land development that was made possible by the so-called Community Councils.

We encouraged engagement by public actors, local leaders and representatives of the private initiative by organizing a series of practical workshops and discussions to identify the needs, possibilities, partnership opportunities and means to raise funds for the projects and programs to be implemented. This helps create actions that are directly related to the local culture without requiring communities to give up their traditions and costumes.

The process makes possible a significant change in the local reality that is not based on welfarism but rather on developing and training the participating communities to act independently.

CULTURAL APPRECIATION

Dedicated to preserving and disseminating the culture
of traditional populations in our regions.

Coisa de Índio Project

In partnership with the Coordinating Body of Brazil’s Indigenous Peoples (APIB), the initiative’s goal is to strengthen indigenous communities by reclaiming their cultural heritage and training youth to work in other job markets.

INCOME GENERATION

Our projects are designed jointly with local communities, always respecting each region’s aptitudes and particularities.

Community Agriculture

COMMUNITY AGRICULTURE

The project fosters the development of subsistence agriculture and marketing of surplus products to complement household incomes.
We work through partnerships to organize training programs and provide technical support to enable beneficiaries to cultivate products in the collective interest.

Sustainable Extractivism

SUSTAINABLE EXTRACTIVISM

The project works to strengthen the production and processing of native fruits and other non-wood products, such as babassu palm nuts and açaí. Through the project, we also develop partnerships with the Chico Mendes Institute (ICMBio), trade associations and cooperatives to expand production capacity by providing training and creating infrastructure.

Apiculture

APICULTURE

The apiculture program gives beneficiaries an opportunity to become bee farmers, which creates a new opportunity to generate complementary income for the local community.

The project consists of offering technical training, materials and areas for bee farmers to install their hives. The activity has grown substantially in recent years, since the eucalyptus flower is considered one of the best for the production of honey and honey byproducts.

Fish Farming

FISH FARMING

Through the project, families learn all stages of tilapia farming, from breeding fishlings to selling production, which generates complementary household income. The families, which dedicate part of their time to fish farming and another to other agricultural activities, take turns caring for the fish tanks.

EDUCATION

In the area of education, our activities seek to strengthen the public school system in order to maximize social capital and break down barriers to new opportunities.

Educate & Train

EDUCATE & TRAIN

Supported by strategic partnerships, we help improve school indicators and raise awareness on the importance of reading through the two different fronts of the program Educate & Train:

  • Teaching: carried out through a partnership with the Ayrton Senna Institute and local education departments, this front aims to support the learning process of children enrolled in public elementary and middle schools through the programs Correção de Fluxo (São Mateus, Espírito Santo) and SuperAção Jovem in São Paulo state. • Encouraging reading: carried out in partnership with the Ecofuturo Institute, this front consists of installing community libraries in public schools that are open to the local community in order to democratize access to books and to foster reading.
Networked managers

NETWORKED MANAGERS

In yet another partnership with the Ayrton Senna Institute, this program supports the sharing of experiences, good practices and results among a group of municipal governments that register high-quality performance indicators in their public education systems. These are 11 cities in various regions of Brazil that, because of their good practices in education, were recognized by the Ayrton Senna Institute and have become part of the Administrators Network group.

These municipalities managed to reduce their student failure and dropout rates to near zero, while increasing average grades in Portuguese and Mathematics. In fact, most of the federal government’s educational targets have already been attained. Learn more.

Golfinho Project

GOLFINHO PROJECT

Sponsored by Suzano since its creation, the Golfinho Association benefits children and their families with tutoring classes and lessons in computers, music, sports, arts and crafts. The project also seeks to reclaim the regional culture, encourage the use of recyclable materials and generate income for the families involved, who sell their art at the Golfinho in Action store. In 2016, the association commemorated its 20th anniversary.
