Pioneering Spirit and Commitment. The way to attain certification.

Suzano always believed in responsible growth. Throughout Suzano's history the company has believed in using cutting-edge processes and technologies, seeking to achieve high productivity with the minimum possible impact on natural resources, always abiding by the principles of sustainable development.

Established in 1924 by Leon Feffer with the initial objective of selling imported papers, Suzano is currently one of the leading integrated manufacturers of eucalyptus pulp and paper in Brazil. It produces paper made from 100% eucalyptus pulp, which was an extremely important development for the pulp and paper industry in Brazil and abroad.

In 1986, Suzano was the first Brazilian company to use the ECF (Elemental Chlorine Free) process for whitening pulp by substituting elemental chlorine (an aggressive substance to the environment) with oxygen.

In the following years upgrades were made to Suzano's mills, thus increasing its production capacity and optimizing improvements in their industrial and environmental processes. The eucalyptus plantation along with the infra-structure and environmental conservation areas were also expanded, totaling 428 thousand hectares (1.06 million acres) throughout five different states.

Thanks to these actions carried out in the eucalyptus forests in the states of Bahia and Espírito Santo, Suzano became the first company in Brazil, and worldwide, with 100% eucalyptus forests to be listed in the CCX - Chicago Climate Exchange, for carbon emission credit transactions, a mechanism devised by the Kyoto Protocol to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Suzano is qualified to sell five million tons of carbon arising from 39 thousand hectares of planted forests.

The impact of investments already made - and projected - to the forests and mills will also be reflected in the years to come, both by increasing production capacity and by reducing costs and consumption of manufacturing materials, consequently contributing further towards the sustainable development of Brazil.
