São Paulo, May 6, 2009 – Suzano Pulp and Paper (Bovespa ticker: SUZB5), received today in New York, the Rainforest Alliance award for its sustainable practices. For the company, developing its business and neighboring communities, in a sustainable manner, ensuring preservation of the biodiversity is much more than a concept. And it was precisely this commitment that enabled the company to be recognized for its leadership in FSC-certified forestry products in Brazil and for its social and environmental responsibility policies when manufacturing pulp and paper.
As a pioneer Non-Governmental Organization in forestry certification, Rainforest Alliance is accredited by FSC (the Forest Stewardship Council), which corroborates the excellence of practices implemented during industrial and forestry management activities, and is responsible for the SmartWood Program that assesses the FSC principles and criteria for companies to qualify under the certification standards.
At the award ceremony, participants attended a workshop on sustainability when each one of the awardees had the opportunity to discuss and share their best practices with the audience. FSC International, Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN), Sustainable Tourism Operations, both certified and non-certified companies by Rainforest Alliance attended the event.
Since its beginning up to today, the company seeks to solidify its commitment with the future and in establishing a tradition and reputation based on quality relationships. Sustainability is the basis of the company’s activities including the ability to allow cycles to renew themselves. Therefore, it is important not only to invest in operational assets, but also to build long-lasting quality relationships with consumers, communities, suppliers, governments and other stakeholders, that are based on mutual respect and trust.
To meet the expectations of these stakeholders, both in Brazil as well as abroad, Suzano decided to certify 100% of its Forestry Management according to FSC principles and criteria, and today it has the largest forestry area that has received a variety of international certifications. Its certified area covers 246,000 hectares and industrial units have obtained FSC, ISO 14001, ISO 9001 and OHSAS 18001 certifications.
As a global leader in FSC-certified eucalyptus production, last year, the company initiated yet one more FSC-certification phase, which from now on forward will also involve suppliers of the Suzano Landowner Assistance Program. Since 2007, Suzano initiated a project to finance and orient the printing sector so that this phase of the production chain could also obtain the FSC seal, extending the initiative throughout the chain of custody. In total 35 printing companies and 1 distributor have been certified. Two notebook manufacturers are carrying out the process to obtain certification.
“Having 100% of its Forestry Management certified according to FSC principles and criteria, along with all other certifications, confirms the company’s excellence in all its manufacturing and forestry practices. It is a sign that our activities are aligned with the concept of sustainability, that is, they are economically viable, environmentally correct and benefit the community,” concludes Luiz Cornacchioni, executive manager of the Institutional Relations department. |
