Suzano installs a security video monitoring in Ribas do Rio Pardo

Suzano, a global benchmark in the manufacture of bioproducts developed from cultivated eucalyptus, completed the installation of a security video monitoring system in Ribas do Rio Pardo, the town where the company is building a new plant. Made up of a network of 28 cameras that are distributed across 12 points in the town and interconnected via fiber optic cabling to the control center at the Military Police headquarters, the system provides better security to the population, helping prevent crimes and supporting public security agents in investigations and surveillance of routes leaving and entering the town.

To install the system, the company acquired 22 fixed and six motorized 360-degree cameras with 45x optical zoom that can read a vehicle’s license plate from a distance of approximately 80 meters. In fact, 12 of these cameras have optical character recognition (OCR), enabling them to read the license plates of vehicles entering and leaving the town. Additionally, all cameras are powered by solar energy, ensuring reliability even when power supply is interrupted.

“Since Suzano began construction of its new plant, we have made a commitment to the local community to improve various aspects of the lives of the people of Ribas do Rio Pardo, including public safety, through a basic environmental plan and several other initiatives. One of our Culture Drivers is ‘it’s only good for us if it’s good for the world”. Accordingly, we believe that by installing this video monitoring system, we are helping make the town safer for everyone,” said Maurício Miranda, director of Engineering at Suzano.

In addition to installing the cameras and the entire infrastructure to support them, it was also necessary to adapt the control center at the Military Police headquarters, which included expanding the facility and building a new locker room equipped with three showers and four bathroom stalls, two urinals and two sinks. The total investment made by Suzano in the project, which was part of another stage of the basic environmental plan approved by the Municipal Council for Sustainable Development, was R$1,050,000.00.

According to the general commander of the Military Police in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Renato dos Anjos Garnes, public security is one of the state government’s priorities, as it is directly linked to people’s top values, such as life, freedom and the protection of their assets. “This is why cooperation between public authorities and the private sector is key. One example is this partnership we have with Suzano, leading to the installation of the video monitoring system in Ribas do Rio Pardo, which has significantly helped the work of the Military Police,” he said.

Commitments to the Community

The system is another project in the area of public safety completed by Suzano as part of the basic environmental plan. The company has also presented three vehicles to the Civil Police—one for transporting prisoners, one official police car for overt policing in the town and one car for undercover investigations. It also donated one official vehicle to the Military Fire Department and another for exclusive use by the Federal Highway Police (FHP), in addition to security equipment to the Mato Grosso do Sul Military Police riot battalion.

Other projects underway include the installation of radio communication equipment for the FHP in four towers along Highway 262, and construction of the FHP Operational Unit, a new Civil Police station, Worker Center and Support Houses, and 50 housing units. Currently, a new Family Health Center is under construction in the Estoril II neighborhood, according to the floor plan established by the Ministry of Health. It has approximately 350 m² of built area and is expected to be completed in January 2024.

As part of the basic environmental plan, the company has also presented a Family Shelter to the town’s government, and completed the expansion of the Municipal Hospital of Ribas do Rio Pardo, including 30 new beds (20 in the infirmary and 10 in the ICU), of which three were donated by Suzano. The company also provided R$470,000 worth of equipment to enable the Municipal Hospital laboratory to perform new tests, aiming to increase the capacity and speed of medical assessments.
